City of Lights Festival

Free screenings celebrate Tamworth's rich heritage and pioneering role as the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to install electric street lighting. Running over two evenings on 25 and 26 September, guests are invited to enjoy a unique 12-minute presentation that takes audiences on a journey through the early years of Tamworth and highlights the city's significant place in Australian history. The film showcases Tamworth's achievement as the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to have electric street lights, while also exploring the area's rich entertainment heritage. Audiences will discover stories and images from some of Tamworth's most iconic venues, including the Royal Theatre, Ison's Picture House, Regent Cinema, Tamworth Hoyts Drive-In, and the Capitol Theatre. This presentation offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to relive the yesteryears of Tamworth and learn about the venues and people that helped shape the city's cultural history.
